Why do people choose vegan and vegetarian?

Updated: May 24, 2021

There are a great many reasons why people choose to exclude meat and fish from their diets. Here, some of those are listed:

Animal rights. It is true that the UK has some of the highest standards of animal welfare in the world. It is however the opinion of some that animals, not matter how they are looked after, should be slaughtered for food. This in turn links to people being vegan and vegetarian because of their belief in animal rights. Also, when going out to eat, it is not always possible to know where the meat or fish has actually come from and to what standard it has been reared. Consequently, people choose to avoid meat and fish altogether.

Conflict of interest. Linked to above, most people who have pets cannot comprehend eating them. While a family eats a chicken for instance, it looks after their dog very well. Some question what the difference is, so decide that meat is not for them.

Environment. It should be said first that there are different farming standards across the world. With this, come different emissions and environmental impact. It is true though, that livestock farming uses more land than plant crops in percentage of food yield terms. Also, there is less water involved in crop production and according to some studies less greenhouse gas emissions. In terms of fishing, many fish stocks are overfished, such as Tuna. By not eating fish the demand falls, and people try to play their part in protecting the ocean and sea ecosystems.

Health. One of the big reasons in avoiding meat for health reasons is because people want to reduce their saturated fat intake. Like all diets though, to be healthy a vegan or vegetarian has to be balanced.
